Keynote Description
In his keynote presentation, Eric shares his experience of being wrongly accused for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, suffering sub-human prison conditions, and fighting against a web of sinister political acts.
By weaving together a recent history of the relationship between the U.S. and Nicaraguan government, his confrontation with the Central American legal system, and how he survived more than a year of wrongful imprisonment, his story is part Law & Order, CSI, and Locked Up Abroad, all rolled into one.
Audiences will be riveted by the unbelievable accusations, lack of evidence, and other nuances of his court case, as he explains how he became a political pawn, in an elaborate plan to assert a Sandinista agenda. He’s passionate about sharing the positive lessons he has learned throughout his ordeal:
- We are all survivors in one way or another.
- It is an essential part of the human experience to give and receive compassion.
- Although bad things can happen to good people, one should always strive to maintain a sense of gratitude.
Eric’s true story is shocking, mesmerizing, and above all inspirational.

“Eric Volz’s amazing story resonated with so many different audiences on our campus. He connected with journalism students because of his background as a publisher. Documentary film students appreciated how he told his story through YouTube and other new media outlets. Law students were fascinated by the intricacies of his case. And students committed to social change connected with similar examples of injustice around the world. Eric Volz is really four expert speakers found in one remarkable person.”

"Eric's presentation definitely met and exceeded my expectations. The crowd was completely engaged during his lecture and there was a lot of thought provoking discussion after. They couldn't believe they weren't familiar with his story and that it was incredible he survived. A lot of people were blown away by his strength and integrity after what happened to him. Eric is not only a phenomenal and engaging speaker, but he is a humble human being who is taking his experience to make a difference and help restore the memory of Doris Jimenez."
