This is the first time a lawsuit has been filed against Nicaragua in the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, making it monumental not only for Jason, but also for international law. The petition specifically requests urgent action in light of the subhuman prison conditions in which Jason is living.

It is my hope that this letter finds you full of purpose and peace! It has been over a year since I last sent out an email to this community and much has happened in that time.

With the culmination of the dramatic end of the wrongful detainments of: the West Memphis 3 (Arkansas), Michael Morton (Texas), The Hikers: Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer, and Josh Fattal (Iran) and now Amanda Knox and Rafaelle Sollecito (Italy) in recent months, I cannot help but remember the outpouring of support from the Friends of Eric Volz community - each and everyone of you - who sent prayers, wrote letters and donated resources. And I am forever indebted for your grace and love. Let us pray for a smooth road to recovery and reconnection for those recently released and named above.

There is an increasing fascination with these stories of wrongful imprisonment. And as such, I want to tell you about a new case I have been following closely - that of American Jason Puracal in Nicaragua. Yes, Nicaragua - again.

Jason Puracal, a husband and father, has been wrongfully convicted on charges of drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime. I have personally studied the case documents and am 100% confident in his innocence. There is ZERO evidence linking him to any of these charges. Beaten by the police, and denied food, water, and proper medical care, Jason was held for over nine months in the Nicaraguan prison before he even went to trial. Sadly, this past September, Jason was convicted without evidence and sentenced to 22-years in prison. Meanwhile, he fast approaches the one-year mark of imprisonment, trapped in sub-human conditions in one of the most dangerous prisons in Central America.

I want to encourage you to be part of the mission to bring him home. These cases are always taxing, but the tireless support of community is what gives courage and oxygen to the inner circle fighting for the prisoner's life.
